Festival of three
religions for refuge in Bangladesh, 850 euro
A
Dutch woman, Joke Wittekoek of JW Support, has taken over the full
care for 54 children. She has found private resources to do this and
has involved a local partner, Shalom Bangladesh Mission Trust.
The
children – in the ages 5 till 20 years - live in three different
houses in Dacca. A boys home for class 1-5 (ages 6 till 12), a
teenage boys home for class 6-10 (ages 12-17 ) and a girl’s home
for all girls between 5 and 16 years old. The children are all
brought in from a traumatised life on the streets and get basic
care; a home, food and education. The homes are often asked by
people in the neighbourhood or other charity organisations to take
in more kids but the lack the resources to take more than the most
urgent cases: this year they accepted five new children, chosen from
a list of 100 kids needing help.
The staff has had to work hard to make ends meet, and there is no
money for extras. There is no money to celebrate the festivals of
the children's various religions – Christians, Hindus, and Muslims
– with a meal that includes meat, deserts and sweets; nor is there
money to have an annual picnic, or to organise a trip, to a museum
for example, every two years. For that, JW Support is asking for a
€ 850 donation. This will be sufficient to offer many moments of
joy to 100 children (including the 39 children who have been placed
with the local partner). Apart from that the children get to know
and accept other religions in a very positive – festive – way.
Together they celebrate Christmas, Easter, Eid, Ramadan and the
Hindu Festival.
Moments of Joy has sponsored the celebration of the religious days
and the outings last year as well and it was a big success.
