Free
Legal Aid Clinic, Bangladesh, Euro 7000
Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST) has been giving free Legal aid to the poor people of Bangladesh for many years. From mediating in domestic issues to filing and defending land rights cases before the High Court. The cases range from divorce cases, to disputes over salaries, from working conditions to rights over property. To be as accessible as possible to the people they run three legal aid centers or clinics as they call them, right in the middle of low-income areas of
Dhaka.
At these centres BLAST organizes trainings
for the people instructing them about their legal rights and also
offers mediation for whoever needs it. Only when after the mediation,
the conflict still persists, the parties will need to go to the more
sophisticated BLAST offices to file their cases. Women, who usually
wouldn’t dare to approach a lawyer, feel comfortable to enter
these clinics to ask for help. The Gopibag clinic is one of these
centres and has helped many people in the area.
BLAST is well respected and has close ties with the Bar Associations
and government agencies throughout the country. Due to the recession
the funds BLAST usually received from its large donors have
seriously diminished. And, although funds from new large donors have
been confirmed, BLAST would need immediate financial relief to
bridge the period until all necessary bureaucratic requirements have
been met. To keep one clinic running for a year, BLAST, needs around
Euro 7000,- to pay for the rent, utilities, office equipment and
salaries for the staff.
