Vocational training for young people with limited opportunities
in Bangladesh, 6494 euros
The objective of the
Social Employment Office Vialisa is to offer young people (15 to 22
years) with limited opportunities the chance to develop and to be
able to make full use of their capacities in a pleasant work
situation. Moments of Joy has supported Vialisa upon earlier
occasions and would like to do so again by providing funds for the
rent of training space and the salaries of two instructors.
There are many NGOs in Bangladesh: children,
women, the elderly, there is something for everyone. But these young
people, the ones who will also have to work to build up their
country, are often left behind. Vialisa wants to help young people
who might drop out of projects because they are too old and other
young people who have missed the boat and never had any education.
Vialisa acts as an intermediary between the business world and young
people with limited opportunities. It offers training programmes to
help them prepare for the labour market. Through their contacts and
mediation young people with little or no schooling have a chance to
prove themselves in a work situation. Moments of Joy has supported
this organization since its inception, which had difficulty in
achieving recognition from large organizations that are adamantly
opposed to “child labour”. After two years the results are so
positive that they have received funding from the Dutch Organization
for International Support, NOVIB.
Vialisa’s Approach
Recruiting
Staff members search actively for appropriate jobs for the young
people in companies, institutions and with private individuals.
Despite the minimal work experience of the young people, Vialisa
looks for positions requiring a certain amount of know-how. This
makes it a challenge for the young people and allows them to build a
certain level of self-confidence and to grow in their jobs. Before
anyone starts work, agreements are made with the employers about
wages, working hours, training and opportunities for promotion. To
convince an employer to take on a trainee from Vialisa, Vialisa is
willing to pay the salary of the young person for a period of 3
months.
Guidance
Vialisa guides both the employer and the young employee during the
work process for a minimum of 1 year. A social worker makes regular
visits to the place of employment to assure that the agreements made
by both the employee and the employer are met. It is often the case
that the young people had had irregular work hours which led to
difficulties in the beginning, in particular with routine and
discipline.
By preparing employers for all types of problems that might crop up,
there is more understanding and support, so that the young people
are given a good chance to feel at home in the new situation and to
develop.
Vocational training
Vialisa Korail Education Centre
In Korail, a neighbouring slum area, the 'Korail Vialisa Education
Centre' was opened in May 2006. This centre offers Basic training, a
Tailoring course and Personal Development courses every six months.
The centre can accommodate 38 students.
Vialisa Banani Education Centre
In June 2007 a second training centre was opened, ‘Vialisa Banani
Education Centre’. This centre offers training courses to prepare
young people for a job in the tourist sector and in business.
Computer courses, financial administration, presentation techniques,
buying and selling strategies and communications are among the
topics that are taught. These training courses are very intensive
and only offered to young people with tremendous motivation and
drive.
Change
In July 2007 the first training shop was opened, called ‘Change’.
In this shop, young people can put into practice what they have
learned and they are trained to become independent business people.
Good Morning
There is also a Bed & Breakfast that has been opened to offer
young people practical experience so that it is easier to find a job
in restaurants, private households or hotels.
• By offering young people practical training, parents can see
that it is worth investing in their children.
• Under Vialisa’s guidance, young people are given the
opportunity to put their knowledge to work, which increases their
chances in the labour market.
• By paying the young people for their training, Vialisa
demonstrates to those in their environment that the children are not
being taken advantage of, and also creates more trust in NGOs.
• By organizing meetings with parents, the families become
involved in the development of their children.
• By offering payment for training the burden of the family income
is lightened. This makes it possible for younger brothers and
sisters to go to school.
