Christmas
dinner - on the street and at Mission Adulam, 450 Euro
The three homes run by Mission Adulam in La Paz, Bolivia have been a success. They are: Adulam (addicted teenagers of 13 to 18 years old), Talita Cumi (15 to 20 addicted women of 13 to 27 years old, sometimes with their children) and since recently also Mistsuna.
The name Mistsuna stands for 'climbing up and progress' and has been built especially for the youngsters who have reached the third phase in their rehabilitation programme (assisted lodging and social reintegration). In this house they will train their further independence. In addition, Mission Adulam has started CELABAB: a job-training centre.
The organisation's work has been successful. In 2004, five young girls were successfully reunited with their families; four young women found a job and live independently, the young children went to nursery and primary school. Similar success was achieved for the boys and men. Unfortunately this year, as is the case each year, some people returned to the street, but the experience is that some of them will eventually return to Mission Adulam and pick up where they left off.
The organisation is currently preparing the Christmas celebrations in the homes, but there are also street visits planned (a few days before Christmas). Both are of great importance to the target group. They often celebrate Christmas in a house for the first time, with the special meal and a present that go with it. In previous years, it has also emerged that receiving a small present and a meal on the street just before Christmas can be a determining factor in trading life on the street for a life in one of the homes.
Moments of Joy has supported Mission Adulam - which is run by the Dutch Fineke Janssen - in the past by a donation for, among other things, sewing machines for the job training of young women, a television for one of the homes and contributions for the Christmas celebrations in the homes (see photo).
For the Christmas dinners this year in Adulam and Talita Cumi we need 300 Euro; for street visits to 100 people 42 Euro; for 25 Christmas loafs. And for a present for the adults (underwear and socks) and for the children (sweaters knitted by the women in Talita Cumi) 100 Euro. Total 450 Euro.
