Hairdressing course in Brasil , 2100 euro

Florianopolis is a Brazilian city (a peninsula) of about 400,000 people. The poor areas of the city are growing because many people who move to the city for extra work during the tourist season end up staying afterwards, even if there is no work. Anyone who can afford it will put their children in private secondary schools. The other children go to the state school, and there is only one, in the northern part of the peninsula.

This school has 1700 pupils and is free. As in other parts of the country, the children go to state school for half days. This means that there is a considerable risk that children from the deprived areas spend the rest of the day on the street, get involved with alcohol and drugs and end up in (petty) crime. Many of these state school children are already known by the policy at an early age.

ASAS is an NGO set up by volunteers and aimed at supporting these children and adolescents by organising various activities which will keep them off the street and will increase their chances of finding a job after leaving school. Sport, creative courses, computer courses and job training will give this group of 14 to 18 year olds a first step to a working life.

ASAS is the only organisation in the north of the peninsula specifically aimed at this group. The vice-president and founder of the organisation is a Dutch expatriate woman living in Florianpolis. She has succesfully set up similar projects in Sao Paulo. One of the projects which she wants to start up now is a hairdressing course for girls from 16 to 18 years old. They will receive training in groups of six girls over a period of six months; they will be taught twice a week for 1.5 hours by an experienced hairdresser from Palma Rosa, a popular hairdressing salon in town. The trainees will soon be able to start working in their neighbourhouds, and practise on neighbours and friends in the training salon. There are enough salons in the town to offer the trainees future employment.

The management of the school is keen to help because it believes that these types of activities are essential and it knows that there will be a large number of volunteers to help out.
ASAS will need 2100 euros for three chairs, a large mirror, a sink, scissors, towels and other related items.

Total € 2100,--
