A Christmas backpack filled with school supplies
It is almost time to go back to school again. There will be many children from Jandira, a suburb of Sao Paolo, eager to start the new school year. In South America the school year runs from February to December. With expectant faces and backpacks filled with pens and notebooks, the children set off to meet their teachers. There is a group of children in the same city, however, for whom going to school is not so one-two-three. They are the ones from "Casa Familia e Vida", a children's home on the edge of one of the favelas, the slums of which there are so many in
Jandira.
Casa Familia e Vida was set up 4 years ago under the direction of an Italian
priest, 3 nuns and a Dutch woman. With the support of donations, it has now become a family home for 25 disadvantaged children who had no future at home. Most of these children were the victims of
violence, both in the home and in the streets; some have come into contact with drugs and
prostitution. They are given the chance in Casa Familia to grow and learn and ultimately stand on their own two
feet.
These 25 children living in Casa Familia, along with 55 others from the slums come under a sponsored school project. The project, which was set up by the same Dutch woman who works in the home, makes it possible for the children to attend elementary and secondary school.
However, there is no money for school supplies and cleaning
materials, which are normally paid for by the parents.

And it is difficult to take part in the lessons if you have nothing more than a
pencil.
That is why the people in charge of "Casa Familia en Vida" want to give their children and some others from the slums a backpack for
Christmas. A backpack with the necessary pens, paper, eraser, ruler,
paint, etc., so that these children can greet the new school year with proud faces and new
confidence.
For only 1680 Euros, 55 children can begin the school year with the same supplies as the other children at school; they can learn a bit
better; and the chance of a better future comes a bit closer, whereupon… etc, etc. Merry Christmas and Felice
Novidad, from them.
