Barbershop in the Philippines, 1300 Euro
Felix Abbela (34), known
to friends and relatives as Jun, is a talented barber, who has the
ability to give the kind of haircut that is best-suited to a
particular person. Coming from a poor family, he did not have the
opportunity to finish high school and went to work at a young age.
He used to hold odd jobs as a waiter, male servant, construction
help and messenger in an office. One day, he happened to pass by a
small barbershop in downtown Cebu City and he decided that was what
he wanted to be: a barber. He applied for a job and the owner of the
shop was kind enough to teach him the basics until he became skilled
enough to be taken in as a regular barber.
After he got married and had a son, Jun put
up his own barbershop because his place of work was too far away
from his village. He found a place where he could put up a small
house and shop free of rent. He has taken in his aging father and
unmarried uncle who are in their ‘80s, don’t receive any pension
and need medical attention. Jun’s entire family is fully dependent
on his income. On weekdays, he makes an average of U.S.$ 3.00, on
Sundays U.S. $ 5.30. This is barely enough for the basic needs of
five people and there’s nothing left to save for things like
clothing, medicine, entertainment, etc. The main reason he does not
earn more is that he cannot attract more customers because he lacks
the equipment and a presentable shop. This means he cannot compete
with the more elegant barbershops along the high-way. Since he is a
hard worker who opens early in the morning and closes shop at almost
midnight, seven days a week, there is no reason why he can’t have
more customers and double or triple his income, if only he has the
right tools and facility.
