Mini bus for kids from Arte Accion, Honduras, 5000 Euro
ARTE ACCION is a cultural
organization which was set up after hurricane Mitch (November 1998)
to bring relief and joy to people in the destroyed capital city,
Tegucigalpa, who had lost their homes. After this project, the
artists decided to continue and work towards the consolidation of
Arte ACCION as an association that projects artists and promotes art
as an integral part of community development. Art brings alternative
opportunities for recreation, expression, communication and social
integration to people who do not normally have access to this.
In 2004 Moments of Joy paid for a
professional light-set for Arte Accion’s performances. And for the
bus tickets for two groups of teenagers from Amarateca who had been
offered a computer course in the capital, free of charge. And we
supported the general transport-fund to cover the costs to bring
young children from Amarateca to the own premises of Arte Accion in
Tegucigalpa, so that they can follow the art-lessons there, free of
fear and aggression. (Amarateca is a ghetto-like village with a lot
of street-gang violence.) Due to the increasing violence it became
impossible to continue the art lessons in Amarateca itself.
The most dedicated adolescents who followed the art-lessons now
teach other children in villages and neighbourhoods in the Amarateca
Valley. This also gives them a better status in their own
neighbourhoods.
In 2007, 30 adolescents gave art-lessons to 750 children, 8
street-festivals have been organised and a lot of workshops and
performances for other organisations have also been successful. Arte
Accion gives it young volunteers a small amount of money every month
to enable them able to finish high school.
In 2008 Arte Accion will focus on three villages in the Amarateca
Valley, where new groups of peer-trainers will be trained to give
lessons to at least 600 children in circus, mural drawing, T-shirt
printing, theatre, puppet theatre and producing radio plays.
Moments of Joy paid for a big second hand bus in 2006. This bus is
well known in Honduras and neighbouring countries because of the
many international tours that have been with it. It also drives
around Amarateca several times a week.
Because of the growing number of trainers and pupils, Arte Accion
now needs a mini van or pick up truck to transport small groups of
adolescents to the villages where they teach new groups of children.
Until now it has been impossible to realise this wish as and most
donor-organisations don’t want to fund transport as they want to
concentrate on educative projects. This is a problem Moments of Joy
has seen more often and is a pity because this way some very useful
and joyful projects – in this case for hundreds of children in
different villages - can’t be realised, just because of this
relatively small financial problem.
Moments of Joy would like to donate the needed 5000 euro for a mini
bus or pick up truck.
