The soccer school Leġes
de Laulane has started training girls soccer teams since last year.
Girls would like to do more sports but often the girls teams have to
be financed with whatever money is left over. The organisation
Centro de Encontro wants to promote girls soccer, and have them play
in their own leaugue and organize open days. This year the top girls
soccer team played at the federal level. Apart from the athletic and
social effect there is an added bonus. With the large number of (mostly
female) supporters it is easy to make contact with a lot of girls by
the AIDS volunteers while cheering on the teams at the sidelines.
Centro de Encontro has tried to organize
activities for street children in the centre of Maputo, the capital
of Mozambique, since 1994. There is a street school, a soccer club,
a rap group (with a number one hit on the charts in Mozambique) and
also an AIDS awareness group with volunteers spreading information
among these kids while attending the activities.
Since 2000 Centro de Encontro has been working together with soccer
club Nova Alianca. This club is affiliated with the national soccer
association, they help out with administrative duties and they pay
the salary for the coach Manuel. All other costs are paid for by
Centro de Encontro .
The junior boysteam (18 players in the age group of 16-18) played
for the championship of the city of Maputo last year. They had to
train 5x a week. In the semi-final they held the score at 1-1 but
lost in a shoot out; an outstanding achievement for a
streetkids-team. An enormous success and even more impressive if you
realize what they were up against. In this federal competition of
the Mozambique Soccer Association all the junior teams in Maputo,
even the professional top clubs in Maputo, participate.
An added bonus is that during the soccer games, AIDS volunteers from
the Centro de Encontro can try to talk to supporters on the dangers
of AIDS and other STDs and hand out flyers and condoms.
The founding of a girls division was a milestone for the soccer
school. Some 250 girls showed up at the open training days. A total
of 120 girls was selected to start playing in the first girls
league. Another 20 girls were selected to play for a federal team
that will enter the 2008 federal league. To be able to join in this
federal league the Soccer school Leġes de Laulane, still needs a
lot of materials for this first girls team.
Materials and outfits 980 Euro
The total amount for trainings- and official matchballs, team
outfits, shinguards, sportsbags, new goals with nets for the
training pitch comes to 980 Euro.
Shoes 700 Euro
During training these children play barefoot to save on materials
but in official matches and tournaments, organized by the Soccer
Association, shoes are mandatory. 20 Pairs of soccer shoes of the
cheapest brand comes to an amount of 700 Euro.
