Musical instruments for theatre project with street kids in
Gobabis, Namibia, 1000 Euro
In cooperation with
Ubuntu Theatre Organisation, Early Intervention Programme is
creating a theatre performance with 20 street kids in the town of
Gobabis in Namibia. Many of these kids are orphans or are sent onto
the streets by their parents to beg or search for food. Early
Intervention Programme (EIP) is a small organisation and the only
one in Gobabis which is trying to improve the life of street kids.
EIP has done this work for several years, by
a food programme, medical care, ‘non-formal education’,
counselling, restoring family ties and legal assistance. Now EIP
wants to create a street theatre performance with Ubuntu’s help.
Theatre is often regarded as a luxury. Only if there is enough food
can such luxury be considered. Basic material needs are important,
but food for the soul can contribute greatly to the wellbeing of
these kids. They do not fit into any structure, and theatre is a
good tool to help them gain their own place in society. It provides
them with essential personal and social skills to help them fight
for a better existence. In addition, theatre is the ultimate way to
bring people together and get a message across, so that some
goodwill from the community may be created.
And there is another important aspect: what is a world without
pleasure?
For the humoristic and moving performance – for which 20 talented
kids have been selected – the organisation would like to receive a
donation big enough to buy 10 djembees (drums). During the
rehearsals – which will take more than three months – the
children get lessons from a djembee player. When they have finished
rehearsals, the kids will perform first in their own town and will
then go on a tour along 7 other townships in Namibia.
At the end of the whole project, the kids will be so skilled in
playing the instruments that they will be able to teach other kids
visiting the Early Intervention Programme to play. In addition, the
djembees can be used again at future concerts and theatre activities.
