Bio-gas for every Household in Sherpa-Mude, Nepal, from €420
| Report
In the village of Mude, Nepal, biogas
installations have been placed thanks to the effort of the
Namaste Foundation Breda and a financial contribution by
Moments of Joy. Before the installations had been placed the
villagers had to look for wood to burn their fires to cook
on. They even chopped down trees on a regular basis to
supply their need of wood. Nowadays the Nepalese government
has become very strict about forestry as one has to apply
for a permit to chop down trees. It was important to the
inhabitants of Mude to have the biogas installations
installed. No more hauling wood back to the village, the
forests remain as they are and erosion due to the open
spaces left after intensive forestry would be prevented. The
inhabitants of this area are fully aware of the importance
of taking care of nature. Biogas installations have another
benefit. The rest product, after use, leaves you with
valuable compost. B.S.P. Nepal (a company that installs
biogas installations throughout Nepal) will train the
villagers in the use of compost. The village of Mude itself
has also provided their share in the installations. The
Namaste Breda Foundation finds it essential for people to
participate financially in projects themselves as to create
a bigger commitment to the cause. |
After a very successful
project by the Namaste Foundation, supported by Moments of Joy,
where electricity has been provided to a few small villages in the
neighbourhood of Mude, a town in a mountainous area east of
Kathmandu, we have a new project: A Bio-gas installation for every
household in Mude.
In Each household, with an average number of
family members of 6, uses approx. 280 kilo of wood every month.
Should one wish to use warm water to wash, one can add an extra
number of kilo's to that amount. This wood is found in the local
forest and one needs a permit from the government these days to
collect this wood. People in the village fully understand the
consequences and the effect of this forestry the erosion,
deforestation etc. it causes. Buying gas canisters is not an option
as they are only on sale in Kathmandu and they would take 4 to 5
days to transport these cannisters to the village. It is also rather
expensive. The most effective solution would be to install a bio-gas
installation in every house. Every household has cattle and toilets
and there is enough excrement to make bio-gas to cook on. The sludge
can also be used as compost on their crops. The bio-gas installation
does not come very cheap. Cost per household are € 429,-- of which
€ 10,-- will be put down by the owner of the house. To start off
this project 8 families have signed up for this project. The
understanding is that after this initial "trial" project
the rest of the villages will follow. It does not mean that no wood
will be used but it will bring the volumes down by a huge numbers.
