Aid for the children of women imprisoned in Kathmandu, Nepal, starting at 75 Euros

Many children live in dreadful circumstances in the women’s prison of Kathmandu. Frequently they have been born in prison of mothers who have to serve a long sentence (Twenty years or life are not unusual). The children are allowed to stay with their mother until they reach the age of six; after that they must leave the prison and often end up on the streets because they have no relatives who can or wish to look after them.

Report on the project for prison children in Nepal, from our project finder Engely Tersteeg:

I acquired the furniture and other necessities for the prison children. This went with them when they moved last month to a new building. The rooms have been painted, the curtains hung and the computer put in place. With what was left over it was possible to have a little party with nice things to eat for the kids. Much has been achieved thanks to this donation and there have been many happy moments. The computer is being used by the oldest children so that they will have some experience when they go to school.

This project received a great deal of attention from the Nepalese media at the end of 2009 so that as of December 2009 we are able to continue with Nepalese sponsors. We can pull back now but will stay in the background in case the children need further help.

Thanks to your help These 19 children were taken out of the prison in 2007 and placed in one of our homes. On the picture they are wearing new clothing that came from the Netherlands and we had gone to the zoo for a day.

We can pick these children up from the prison for the daytime.
March 2009: 22 children are now living in our home and 16 are in daycare.

A Nepalese social worker - Pushpa – has been able to get 16 children under six out of the prison. In such a way it is hoped that they will be given the chance “in time” to build an existence for themselves. The “adoption” by this Nepalese woman followed legal channels and met all formalities. She cares for the children now in a house in the city. Our Dutch project finder Engely Tersteeg who runs a home for street children in the area of Kathmandu has taken the fate of these children to heart and paid for such things as the rental of the house and two helpers out of her own funds. But more is needed of course. Medical care, extra – good – food and school fees for example. And it would be fantastic if there was money for an excursion to the zoo. The children have never seen anything except the prison and their current home.

Costs:

• 600 Euros for a year’s “emergency fund” to cover the costs of medical help and medicine.
• 360 Euros for a year’s extra food: meat, eggs and fruit.
• 100 Euros for a year’s school fees, uniforms and all other school necessities for all of the school age children.
• 75 Euros for an excursion to the zoo, including transport, a meal, something to drink and an ice cream.

Total € 1135,--
