Fixing up a relief house
for children whose parents are in jail, Nepal, 1250 Euro
Parents
in Nepal who are in jail must take their children under the age of 6
with them, which means that the children have no future, that they
are brought up within those walls in miserable conditions. We do not
need to give many details for everyone to understand what the
children go through.
With
the help of Engely Tersteegh, the founder of Noble House, a relief
house for street children, a local social worker, Pushpa, was able
to take 19 children out of jail and cares for them in a small house
in Kathmandu. Pushpa is now the official caretaker of the children
and is responsible to the local government for them. That is not
without pitfalls, because if anything goes wrong there is a jail
sentence hanging over her head too. The chance is very small, she
does everything for “her” children, but she could use some extra
help.
The youngest child is 18 months old and the oldest 14 years. The
idea is to find a (Dutch) sponsor for every child for daily care,
school fees and wages for three didis (nannies). Up till this point
that has not been much of a problem, but there is no money left over
to make the house somewhat more child-friendly for these children
who are often seriously traumatized. Bright colours on the walls,
curtains and a carpet would make everything more cheerful. Some
extra furniture to be able to sit together around the table or a
bookcase to put their school things in would also be welcome.
Decorations for the walls, new coloured curtains, bookcases, and
other small items of furniture cost EUR 750,-
The children go to a good school where they receive computer lessons.
There is no computer in the house and that is a tremendous lack. A
computer would also be extremely handy for the administration of the
person in charge of the house. A computer can be purchased for EUR
500,-
