School in Nepal to be used as community centre, total 693 Euros

Nepal is the poorest country in Asia. And primary education is not all that good. There are two types of schools: private schools for the better off (about 30% of the population) and state schools for the rest. The government should see to the state schools, but generally it does not do much more than pay for a couple of teachers and now and again some materials; moreover the farther the school is from Kathmandu, the less money it receives. Mude is four days on foot and one day by bus from Kathmandu, which means that the Shree Bhimsenthan School
does not fare well. The children stem from 9 villages in the vicinity of the school and must walk up to 2 hours to arrive there.

Over the past six years the school has been actively supported by two Dutch people who travel regularly back and forth to Nepal and maintain strict supervision on the allocation of funds they are able to acquire for the expansion and improvement of the school. Moments of Joy has provided support to the school on earlier occasions, enabling the construction of a playground for example.

The school is doing well. More and more children are attending school: the number of pupils increased from 95 in 2000 to 250 in 2007, and expectations are that there will be 300 pupils by the end of the year. That is possible because the number of classrooms has been increased. Parents also see the importance of sending their children to school, even in the planting and harvesting seasons. The children enjoy going to school, partly because of the playground and all of the art materials that Moments of Joy has made available. The presence of the playground has resulted in not just children going to the school but also adults in their free time. Moreover, there are parents who now go to the school once a week to learn to read and write.

Because the school is good, more children stay in their village, rather than moving to the capital of Kathmandu when they are 13 or 14 to engage in unskilled labour, or in the worst case, prostitution. As it is now, they can stay “home” and go to school until they are 18 or 20, and after that no one can take advantage of them.

New sport equipment: 369 Euros

To provide new sport materials and replace those materials that have been worn out, 369 Euros is needed. That will provide 3 Volleyballs, 2 Footballs, 2 Volleyball nets, 3 Ping pong tables, 6 Ping pong table nets, 6 Ping pong rackets and 20 Badminton rackets and Shuttles.

Music instruments for young and old, 324 Euros

At the moment there is a two-storied building, on the ground floor of which there is a room for both children and their parents to gather to dance and sing. What is lacking is musical instruments. “Celebrating” brings people of all ages from 9 villages together, and that is an amazing experience. Moreover, this addition to the function of the school could also be seen as a reward for the parents for sending their children to the school.
324 Euros would make it possible to purchase 1 Harmonium , 2 Guitars, 3 Nepalese Drums, 2 Cymbals, 4 Flutes and 4 Harmonicas.
