On
a narrow land tongue at Sri Lanka's west coast, between Colombo and
Negombo, the fishermen lead a virtually hopeless existence. There
has been overfishing in the sea and the lake on either side of their
land, and the income from fishing is therefore minimal. Alcohol
abuse and suicide are frequent.
In
1994, a number of Dutch people started giving small-scale aid to the
fishing community. This aid consists of after-school care for
village children (approx. 125) with classes in English, maths and
computer; food aid to the poorest families; a little library and a
school for handicapped children. (approx. 30). All work to run this
scheme is done by local people. The money collected by 400 donors is
barely enough to cover running costs, and there is nothing left for
extra activities.
The foundation would like to introduce a music band in the community
for children who have creative and musical talents but are unable to
develop these talents. The band will be playing at parties and
funerals.
Needed: 1200 Euro for musical instruments and music lessons.
