Music Festival for
deprived teenagers, Surinam, € 3.500

The
VDZ foundation (Vooruitgang door Zelfwerkzaamheid) is a good friend
of Moments of Joy. The project "Music for New Creation"
that the foundation held last October had the purpose to reach youth
from socially deprived backgrounds such as children from single
parents, children with a high drop-out rate from school, children
with drug related problems, children starting to behave in a
criminal manner and children with teen pregnancies. They were
involved in this project by participating in making music and
joining in different sorts of artistic expression. The artists that
assisted in this project came from similar backgrounds themselves.
"Music for New Creation" has been organized by the
Shepperd Foundation that works closely with VDZ. The event took
place at Stibula in Latour. The evening started at 19.00 hrs and
lasted till 2 a.m. in the morning. The foundation's promotion
committee had made a plan for this event. Children where stimulated
to join in on all sorts of activities to discover their talents
which can lead to more confidence and a feeling of belonging to the
community. The social environment is formed by anyone that wants to
or can make a difference on the youth of Latour that are between 18
and 35 years old. This is the reason that the Foundation asked the
cooperation of local NGO's, which they did. Artists that
participated added that little bit of extra to stimulate the
children participating by telling their own (similar) stories and to
encourage the children to finish school and to keep believing in the
possibilities that lie ahead of them in the future. Food and drink
where available the whole evening for all the children participating.
The
VDZ foundation is a well-known partner for Moments of Joy. We have
done several successful projects together in the past. Their latest
project is "Music for New Creation". The focus is on young
people (teens) that come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds,
single parent families, that manifest themselves through the high
numbers in school drop-outs, drugs, criminal behaviour and teen
pregnancies.
The Festival will be held to try and involve
the young people by joining musicians and actors who have the same
background as the children they are working wit, .in playing music
and participating in other artistic expressions. Goal is to
stimulate the talents of the kids, help them to believe in their own
possibilities, to build their self esteem and to feel more
involvement with the community they live in.
The performing artists can stimulate the children to believe in
themselves and they can act as examples for the possibilities there
are if you believe in yourself and the future.
