School Leavers Support for 6 students, Zimbabwe, from Euro 340 (Total Euro 2335)

KGVI is a centre and school for physically disabled students from all over Zimbabwe. We provide an academic education, skills training, independent living, social support and an arts programme to students from the age of 3 to 20 years.

The centre supports 115 borders living in our independent living houses. The school has an enrolment of 280 children; most of them are physically disabled but most are also facing social problems. Our goal is to teach our students to be as independent as possible both in their lives but also for the future. If we can give them some practical skills they can start their own projects and are not reliant on the ever diminishing number of jobs available in Zimbabwe. For 2010 we are looking to increase the vocational subjects on offer to our students.

Programme Aims
To provide further educational opportunities to physically disabled young people who would otherwise be unable to attend ordinary A level schools or computer courses and colleges.
To assist physically disabled and orphaned young people with vocational opportunities following their initial education.
To investigate and offer special assistance to those students who are also orphaned or come from single parent families as many of them do in Zimbabwe.

The Proposal
It would be impossible to find further opportunities for all our school leavers however each year there are a few who have good prospects. We would like to be able to help them but all our present resources have to go into supporting the centre and the children still at school. However there are always a few determined students who inspire us to try and find further support. This proposal covers the following students for a year.

Goodwell has an artificial leg following an untreated snake bite when he was a young boy. His parents crossed the border out of Zimbabwe some years ago and he has not seen them since. He wrote his O levels in 2008 and has just written his AS levels at a local Bulawayo school. He has one more year to complete his A levels. Some of his fees are covered by a friend but he still has a shortfall.
He needs the rest of his fees for the three terms of 2010. € 505.

Brenda walks with a severe limp following a road accident. She is an orphan. She wrote her O levels at KGVI in 2008 and for the past year has been working as an apprentice in our kitchen. She would love to go to the Bulawayo Polytech to study catering and hotel management.
Her needs are fees for the course plus items and uniforms required by the college. € 440

Rejoice’s disability is her height as she is very short. She is also an orphan. She wrote her O levels at KGVI in 2008 and for the past year has been working as an apprentice in our offices. She would like to train as a secretary at the Polytech.
Her needs are fees for the course. € 305

Cassandra is deaf and is also an orphan. She lives with an old Grandmother in a very depressed part of the country. She is not very academic so will be joining our kitchen as an apprentice for 2010. After that we will try to find a job for her in the growing catering industry.
Her needs are accommodation costs. € 405

Energy has Brittle Bones (Osteogenesis Imperfecta). He will write his A levels at a local Bulawayo school next year while still living at KGVI. He is studying business management subjects.
His needs are transport to school. € 340

Honest has the same story as Energy except his disability is Haemophilia
His needs are also transport to school. € 340

Total € 2335,--
