Roof repair and new
chairs for primary school in South Africa, 2100 Euro
Three
Dutch students, among them our contact Judith Haring, have chosen
Internationalisation as a minor for their teachers training. Part of
their education is doing research in South Africa, at the Public
Primary School Jarvis Gqamlana in the township New Brighton of
Port-Elisabeth. The 600 students of this school live hovels in this
township.
A
great number of these children are orphans that try to survive by
living in groups with other orphans. And the children that do have
parents are not much better off. Almost no one can pay school fees
and the school is dependent on fundraising activities and donations
for its own survival. Because of the sad fact that the children
often don’t get any meals at home, the school also organises a
food-programme to make sure that the students get at least one meal
a day. There is hardly any money left for school materials, repairs
of the building or furniture. It is impossible to replace or repair
the great number of broken chairs.
For an amount of 2100 Euro, the Dutch students can buy 330 new
chairs and have the roof and outer walls of the building repaired.
