Bridging the gap for Sophia J. and her brothers Sophia lives in Zimbabwe. Sophia's mother was a state registered nurse and midwife. She was been a single parent after her husband died a few years ago; then she herself became ill for a prolonged period of time (2 years) which resulted in a serious financial drain on the family's savings. When she died a year and a half ago, her three children were left with no income and no house. The extended family is totally uninterested and provides the three no help or financial support of any
sort.
Sophia was in her last year of teacher training when this
happened. The continuation of her training was not threatened since she obtained a scholarship on merit from the Conference of Heads of Independent Schools in Zimbabwe. The youngest
brother, Tafadzwa, had just started secondary school and was able to obtain a scholarship to cover school fees for a
year. The other brother, Charles, has not been able to continue school even though he should start A
levels. Apart from the school fees, the small family needed an income to live on of course until Sophia has finished her training and can find a job.
Sophia is at school in Harare; the two brothers had been living by
themselves, in their mother's house a few hundred kilometres from Harare, until they were expelled by the
owner. Sophia urgently needed to find a new home for her brothers and where she could go during the school
holidays. The last holiday she did not have the money to go home and was secretly glad she could
not; she did not dare to go, for fear of not being able to cope with problems she would encounter
there.
The principal of her school asked the representative of Moments of Joy in Zimbabwe for help.
We started by paying 350 Euros; 260 Euro for two months of bus fares,
food, water, electricity and rent and a further 90 Euros for a table and
chair, school supplies and clothes.
Sophia has successfully finished her training and is now looking for a job. We expect she will only need another 350 Euros to bridge the gap until she finds
one. After that, hopefully, she will be able to look after herself and her
brothers.
