Day of festivities for the pupils of the school for disadvantged children in the districts of Laulane and Mahotas in Maputo, Mozambique.
The situation in Mozambique is still troublesome. Kidnapping and robberies are an every day occurance and they are getting more violent. Our project was victim too as our clubhouse and the second handshop were broken into and everything was taken, which is of course a disaster for our modest project. We started it up again and even hired an armed guard to protect our supplies. The local police is corrupted en even rents out weapons to criminals.it is truly a bananarepublic and to make things worse lately there has been more unrest between muslims and Christians. A lot of people are afraid for a return to a civil was state. In these somber times centro de encontro is trying to be a safe haven for the poorest children of the city of Maputo. Through education but also sports , dance and Music centro de encontro is trying to give the children a happier youth and moments of joy.
For the kids at the school for the very poor we organised the yearly day of festivities . Because of a shortage of volunteers the festivities had to be organized on 4 different days. The 650 kids from all different locations of the school were divided over 4 groups and 4 days: 12,13,14 en 19 december. There were sportsactivities like soccer and athletics on the pitch in the district of Laulane, and there was a quiz with prizes and there was a lot of food. The costs for this day were mainly foodsupplies and drinks and cups and plates.

Festive day for street children of Maputo, Mozambique, € 1000
Centro de Encontro is an independent NGO that has organised many activities for street children in Maputo over the past 15 years. The Dutch Rene Boezaard started this project in 1994 en was able to hand over the organisation to a local staff who were trained by himself in 2000. The staff works together with many volunteers from the area.
A day full of activities
This special day has been organised several years in a row now and every year it is a big success. The children look forward to it and are counting on it. The day is packed with activities such as music, theatre and dancing and of course food and a little present, such as clothing and school supplies .
In December 2012 Centro de Encontro wants to continue this tradition. Unfortunately the local businesses are not interested in funding this project. Most likely because public opinion is very negative towards the street children of Maputo.
An amount of € 1000 is needed for a proper meal, rental of equipment for the DJ, transportation, clothing (shirt, pants and slippers) and the presents/school supplies. Last year the 6th grade was allowed to visit the local swimming pool as part of the activities: a great success.
The total cost for the meals, rental of equipment for the DJ, transportation, clothing (shirt, pants and slippers) and the presents/school supplies is € 1000.
