Educational play for children with mental disabilities in Bangladesh

  • Moments-of-joy op Facebook

There are very few organizations in Bangladesh that provide educational support to the large population of mentally handicapped children. The few organizations who do work in this field mainly render medical and therapeutic services to a very insignificant number of these children. But educational development is equally important for the children's survival in society.

TECSN Bangladesh is a voluntary organization which supports disabled children with both therapeutic and educational support. TECSN Bangladesh introduced a need-based educational approach. Therapeutic Education is an individualised developmental supportsystem for a disabled child, that aims at improving their condition, educating the childeren to their personal optimum and rehabilitating them into society with their personal potentials.

Financial Status
The financial expenses of TECSN Bangladesh largely come from a small group of trustees and to some extent from students’ tuition fees. The annual expenditure of the organization is estimated at about US$ 15,000 per year which covers staff salaries , house rents and contingencies. Due to the organization's individualized educational approach the costs are high. A large number of parents of disabled children can not afford to pay for this. Many parents need subsidies for tuition. The total cost per child is about US$ 600 per year.
Moments of Joy was asked to pay for educational play-materials that are specially designed for disabled children. Because these games are relatively expensive, there is no way the school or parents can pay for them without financial help.
