Fast internet connection for young people Gambia

  • Moments-of-joy op Facebook

From our projectfinder: "The internet café I mailing from is very well visited at the moment. The internet connection is much better now. We have a datacard and that works absolutely fine. It brings in more customers as well of course. Almost our whole project for adolescents here is now paid for by the income of the internet café and we are very happy that we can run it this way!"
Future for Young People Association in Gambia runs a youth center in the fishers village Tanji in Gambia. Their goal is to offer the disadvantaged young people in and around this village education and amusement. The centre has a library with 4000 English books, a internet café with 10 computer, a carpentry workshop, a big hall with a stage and a courtyard with an outside stage where all kind of activities are organized.

The center is meant to be self-supporting. This went well until now, only in the case of the internet café it is difficult to cover the costs with the income it generates. It is the only internet café in a 15 km radius and thus important for young people with no means of transport who want to learn more about the world and connect to it. The café receives around 200 a 300 people a month. They pay 15 dalasi (€0,40 ) per half hour for using the internet.

However, the internet connection is slow, which leads to people leaving the computer early or staying away completely. A faster connection costs €125,- a month. If it could be installed, it would help attract more customers. Future for Young People expects it would then be self-supporting in a year or two.
For the first year they would need € 1500, -.
