Food programme for children in Kraaifontein, South Africa

  • Moments-of-joy op Facebook

In the "Wallacedene Informal Settlement" near Kraaifontein in South Africa live around 40.000 people. The community is poor, unemployment is a big problem for almost half of the "working population" and less than a third of the families live in a one to two-bedroom house, the rest lives in shacks.

The local Christian church is very active in trying to relieve some of the emotional stress and also offers practical help. The church has around 200 members and around 200 "ad hoc" visitors. The doors are always open to people who need help, irrespective of whether they are church members, Christians or not.

The church started a food programme for the little children (age 6 tot 12 years) of the poorest families, whom they serve soup and bread every Wednesday and a meal on Sunday. Some pensioners are also served meals on Sundays.

The food is bought from the money the church members donate, but unfortunately these members are very poor themselves, so the church is unable to feed as many children as they would want to. At the moment they struggle to succeed in feeding around a 150 children but there are many more that need food; a lot of children are left without care in the settlement when their parents leave for the day to look for work.
The capacity, size and infrastructure of the church are not very good (it is a small building with cardboard ceilings and partitions, it has a very primitive kitchen with a sink that has a bucket as an outlet, in winter it is too cold, in summer too hot, etc.) but it would be possible to prepare and distribute food for around 300 children twice a week.

Total costs for two meals a week for around 300 children
Per month: 330 Euro
Per year: 3960 Euro

TOTAL € 3960,-- PER YEAR OR  € 330,-- PER MONTH FOR 300 CHILDREN
