Go Togo: Lights for schools in Togo

  • Moments-of-joy op Facebook

In Togo, it gets dark at around 6pm. As children attend school during the day and have to work on the land with their families outside school hours, they have little opportunity to do homework. The only light in this area is provided by petrol lamps., but people cannot afford to buy petrol on a regular basis.

A donation by Moments of Joy has enabled the GoTogo foundation to install electricity and neon lighting in the state primary schools of Saïboudé and Tindjassé.
The teachers, parents, school inspectors, national and local government, and particularly the children have been delighted with this gift. The light in four classrooms enables the pupils to do their homework in the evening. Also, teachers have more time to mark homework and exams. After school, the local population, the schools inspector and government officials also benefit from the light. There are now often meetings at the schools between national, regional and local government and the population. During the day, people have to work hard to survive and it is hard make notes at meetings in the dark. Previously, the few meetings that were held were not well attended. In other words, everyone benefits.

After the last lamps were installed, a party was organised for the pupils. Following a wonderful football match, they were given biscuits and Moments of Joy pencil cases with pens. The pencil cases were printed by hand and sowed by two women from the town of Sokodé.

GoTogo would like to provide electricity and light to as many schools as possible.

The total amount needed per school for two classrooms is € 1.600. As soon as this amount has been raised, the schools of Djarkpanga and Tassi will be the first to receive lighting.
