Medical Checks for Children, Nepal

With help from Moments of Joy the organisation Medical Checks for Children (MCC) went to Nepal. They visited the area where another "partner" of Moments of Joy is active - Namasté Breda!

A team of 5 doctors and 4 medical staff checked a big number of children in the area of Mude, East Nepal, at different schools.
MCC uses a carrousel method that works as follows:
- a form is made for each child with all of the important information
- after this the children are weighed and measured (height etc.)
- a blood sample is taken and checked
- the children get a thorough check by one of the doctors
- if necessary children pass by the pharmacy to get their medication
- a lesson on how to brush your teeth properly
- information is processed in the computer

In total 43% of the children had amnesia. This is probably caused by a combination of an unbalanced diet and active worm infections due to bad hygiene. A large number of the children in Mude have a growth retardation. Malnutrition is a common phenomenon in Nepal.

Apart from the medical checks for children the team also spent a lot of time on education of local helpers, teachers and a few scholars. Especially simple hygiene was given extra attention (hence the worm infections) but also how to prepare a simple and healthy meal and how to avoid infections.
A first aid course was given to 18 people from the various villages surrounding Mude. The main focus was on how to treat fever, cuts and bruises, simple fractures and diarrhea. Our friends of Namasté Breda provided a free First Aid kit for all participants.

The cooperation between Moments of Joy and MCC was a pleasant one and might be continued in one of their future trips to Nepal.
Moments of Joy financed the medical devices and medication for this trip. The volunteers of MCC paid for their own expenses, i.e. flight etc.

Medical Checks for Children, Mude - Nepal, from € 1.500 - € 6.000

Medical Checks for Children (MCC) is active all over the world to medically check and treat children in poverty stricken areas. In 2010 MCC checked approx. 13.000 children on three different continents. This fall (November 2011) MCC will go to the surroundings of Mude (Nepal) to medically check and if necessary treat the children. In this area there are about 1000 children.

MCC executes their medical checks in a quick and efficient manner with the help of a so called "carrousel". Next to this work MCC educates and teaches parents and teachers about health, hygiene and nutrition. In Mude 12 adults have been singled out to take a First Aid course. This course is particularly interesting for these people as it teaches these adults how to treat cuts and bruises, small infections, removal of splinters, diarrhea (how to prepare ORS), how to recognize the difference between a broken- or a sprained bones and the care for mother/child. Education of the local community will add to their being able to be as independent as possible which can result in fewer children dying in childbirth or from the effects of not being treated properly of malnutrition. In the MCC team there are doctors and nurses. MCC pays their own flight and accommodation cost. The participation of Moments of Joy would be sought after in a donation towards the medical expenses, such as medicine, € 2.300 and medical appliances, € 1.500. Total cost for this project is € 6.000,- Moments of Joy is active together with another organisation in this region and therefore fully supports this plan as the whole community will benefit.

Participation as of € 1.500,- - € 6.000,-
