Mosquito Nets for women and children, Burkina Faso

  • Moments-of-joy op Facebook
Within a radius of 90 km around the town of Bobo Dioulasso in Burkina Faso, there are about ten villages, each with their own women's associations. These various associations often work together to work towards better health and living standards for the women and children in their villages. The ASAP organization is active in the region and Moments of Joy has previously supported projects for this organization.

Objectives of the ASAP project:
By making mosquito nets available to women, their main aim is to reduce mortality amongst young children, but at the same time they want to ensure that the health of older children and women can also be improved.

Description of the project:
In rural areas of Burkina Fasso, a woman has an average of 6 children. In rural villages, the mother and the young children sleep together, the older children often sleep in another hut.

The mortality rate amongst young children in Burkina Faso is very high: 20% of children die before the age of 5.
This situation is a result of a combination of factors with Malaria being one of the main causes with 20% of cases.

ASAP's plan is to give the women the opportunity to buy impregnated mosquito nets to protect themselves and their children from mosquitoes. There is no limit to the amount of mosquito nets per woman.
The mosquito nets are impregnated with DEET to repel the mosquitoes and must be re-impregnated annually.

It is important that the mosquito net is used correctly by the women. To achieve this, the following measures are taken:
• The mosquito nets are not provided for free, but the women have to buy them at a subsidized price to make them feel as ownership.
• A training / demonstration will be given in each village to teach the women how to best use the mosquito net.
• A number of women in the village will receive special training to learn how to impregnate the mosquito nets.
• The same group of women will be responsible for checking the correct use of the mosquito net and determining which women are eligible for re-impregnation of the mosquito net.

Cost of the project:
Good quality impregnated mosquito nets will be bought in the local market. A mosquito net costs 4,275 CFA (€ 6.50). Moments of Joy will pay € 5.-- and the women will pay € 1.50 themselves. The goal is to realize between 150 - 200 mosquito nets. The total sponsor amount that is requested is therefore between
€ 750, - - € 1000, -.
