report from project:
THE WONDERFUL GIFT OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS FROM MOMENTS OF JOY FOUNDATION
In a village where nobody in the 6 remote hamlets we now support with education, health, organic farming, water, toilets, etc. had ever heard music prior to our education programmes starting, music is very important in all of their lives, especially the children. Many happiness is shared in communities through music and most  peoples’ cultures and memories are connected to music and songs written by children and adults alike.
The East Bali Poverty Project now has very good programmes to teach more than 250 students in rural areas in 6 different locations between Mounts Agung and Abang in East Bali. Many ideas come from our volunteers who teach music but they found it hard to teach without proper equipment.
Fortunately for us, last year, we received funding from the “Moments Of Joy Foundation” which we have used to buy 7 acoustic guitars, 5 electric bass guitars, 5 Cajon dongkang, 6 keyboards, 12 ukuleles, a dynamic microphone for vocal sound, an amplifier, a mixer, and a microphone stand.
We use these  musical instruments in each class at EBPP’s 6 schools. 202 of our students in primary, junior, and senior high from all schools take part in music classes. There are 17 students who play guitar, 9 students who play keyboard, 37 students who play  ukulele, 10 students who play Cajon, and 129 students play the recorder.
Music is very important for performances, like when we celebrate our National Education Day on 2nd of May and  Independence  Day on 17th of August, when our children are so very proud to perform for their parents, community members and very often donors and other guests who are always amazed and the quality of their music and singing  There often also give special musical performances to welcome visitors.
So once again, we would like to thank Moments of Joy Foundation for finding us the very generous sponsors for the great instruments and equipment. The musical instruments have certainly brought very much joy to our students, their families and communities - and great pride to EBPP team.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS FOR SCHOOLS IN A REMOTE AREA OF BALI
David Booth worked in at least 8 different countries. In 1989 he decided to settle in Indonesia. The British engineer chose to live here because this country, and especially the people, stole his heart: 'the Indonesian people are good from the heart, generous from the soul and care for others'. He founded the East Bali Poverty Project (EBPP) with all of his life savings. He has been executive director ever since and has designed many projects for this foundation together with a team of 104 local people.

In The (EBPP) Music instruments-project that has caught the attention of Moments of Joy is for the children of the area around Desa Ban, a remote east Bali mountain village that covers 7,200 hectares with 19 sub villages scattered over the 2 mountain slopes. There are no street names, only the name of the village. To get to the area there are no roads or paths so it is hard to find. For those who want to try: Desa Ban lies in the Kubu district, Karangasem Regency and the capital city of Karangasem is Amlapura.

When back in 1989, the leaders of the 19 hamlets of this remote mountain village requested David Booth's help, interviews with 1,056 of the 3,500 families verified that apart from no water, toilets, roads, education facilities, health facilities or electricity, the communities in the most remote hamlets (where EBPP now has established 6 schools at their request) had never heard music nor ever seen Balinese dance. As part of their integrated education, EBPP's goal is to open as many opportunities for the children as possible, by offering them a basic education, but also provide pleasure in life for the children and their (illiterate) parents. There are not many employment possibilities in this region, but music might well be a good way of eraning a living, since the many hotels in Bali need musicians. Fortunately, through some donors, EBPP has been able to install solar powered electricity in all its schools, they already contracted a music teacher and they also have some basic recording equipment so that many children are now reaching a semi professional standard.

The success of the programme lies in the concept that each child who learns to play a musical instrument will be sufficiently skilled to teach others and create a culture of learning at the highest possible level.
Not only local instruments are requested but also western instruments such as guitars and keyboards. Balinese hotels receive tourists from all over the world so the students should be skilled in both the typical Balinese music as well as western style music and they will need to learn to work with amplifiers, loudspeakers and microphones to be able to earn money with their performances.

The total amount of money requested for equipment and instruments is 2820 euro. However it is possible to fund only part of the instruments or equipment on the list:
3 microphones - 47,15 euro
1 amplifier - 235,70 euro
12 Ukuleles - 2 for each school - 94,30 euro
6 keyboards - 1 for each school - 895,70 euro
6 cajon dongkang - 1 for each school - 471,40 euro
6 bass guitars with amplifiers - 1 for each school - 471,40 euro
10 acoustic guitars - for all 6 schools - 605,00 euro
