School benches for refugee children in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

In Kuala Lumpur, capital of Malaysia, there is a large group of “city refugees” from a number of different countries such as Myanmar, Pakistan and the Middle East.  Refugees have no rights at all in Malaysia as Malaysia has not signed the International Refugee Convention. Refugees are exploited and live in constant fear of being tracked down by the police.

To help this vulnerable group, that have often come to Malaysia with their families, IDEAS Academy was founded by a group of Dutch Expats that wanted “to give something back”.  IDEAS Academy is a secondary school that believes that education should be available for everyone. By attending this school the children of the refugees have a chance to escape the vicious circle of poverty.

IDEAS Academy opened its doors in 2014 and teaches children in the ages of 12 – 18 years old within the Cambridge Curriculum. By using this international curriculum the children can also finish their education elsewhere.

The waiting list for this school has become longer and longer and because the school would like to offer a wonderful education to as many children as possible they would like to expand the school with two new classrooms in 2017. To start these new classrooms furniture is needed; tables, chairs and bookcases.
The amount needed to help furnish these two new classrooms is € 1.686,--
