Theatre training talented youngsters, Kigali, Rwanda

  • Moments-of-joy op Facebook
Cre8 East Africa believes in the power of arts and cultural education to empower young people to strengthen their self-confidence and develop their talents.
Along with East African partners they have organised musical projects since 2006 in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda.
From 2012, they focus on the training of young people who, as teenagers, participated in the projects between 2006 and 2012.
The training, titled Cre8 in 8, teaches young people to set up their own projects. The aim is to enable them to make a living from their artistic work by acting, teaching, offering workshops in schools and clubs etc.
From December 2019 until March 2020 this training will take place in Kigali,
Rwanda for 8 groups of about 20 participants.
Cre8 works with young people from the most vulnerable groups: (ex) street children, orphans and refugees, without adequate education or basic qualifications to gain a place in the local community and become economically successful.
For these young people one of the ways to get out of the vicious circle, no money = no education = no job = no money come, is discovering and developing
talents and skills. Not only artistically, but also in terms of organizing, guiding groups, communication, etc.
The total costs of the training is € 10,657,--. This covers the rent of a training
facility, teaching materials such as paper, pens and markers, giving a mini performance at the end of the training and travel expenses for trainers and participants.
Ben Hekkema is not paid for his work and pays its own travel expenses from Amsterdam to Kigali.
The other trainers get a daily allowance of € 50 per person per day, and their expenses are reimbursed.
Request to Moments of Joy is to contribute € 1500,-- to cover the catering and travel expenses. The young people participating in the training, travel from home to a central location in Kigali.
For some, it will be within walking distance, others come from surrounding villages and neighbourhoods and must use public transport. The cost for public transport are paid for by the organization. Without that contribution most people would not be able to participate.
