Tiny Miracles, Mumbai, India

  • Moments-of-joy op Facebook
The report:

Tiny Miracles had asked Moments of Joy to help them fund outings for children for their project  they had set up in the outskirts of Mumbai.
The children are part of the Pardeshi Community that have been in the rattan business for many years. Unfortunately many girls did not go to school and a few ended up in prostitution.
The foundation is run by Laurien Meuter who travels to India three times a year to supervise her foundation.
With the contribution of Moments of Joy several outings were organised and below you will find a short report of these outings.

- Sightseeing in Mumbai – The Pardeshi Community lives has lived in Mumbai for several generations but most of the children have never actually been to town. Two double-decker buses where organised and the children and their mother were taken on a tour through the city past all the tourist hotspots. The mothers had all dressed their Sunday best and the children waved to everyone they passed in the streets nearly feeling like real movie stars.

- Dance Party – In March (2013) a Dance Party was held. Disco lights and a speaker set were purchased and all the children got something nice to eat. They danced all afternoon and well into the evening. Disco lights and speakers are currently used often for different activities.
- Waterworld – This outing was especially for the mothers. A long cherished dream had come true, they were going to Waterworld – a big park with several different pool and other attractions. For them it was a chance to escape their real world for one day and not to worry about their children or their husbands. They left early in the morning (with their self-made food for the day) and enjoyed the day with each other without stress and worries.
- Dance teacher Hardik – a professional dance teacher came to the community from November until April (2012 – 2013) every Saturday to teach girls in the ages of 12 – 17 years old to dance. This group often has the hardest time as they are too old to change schools to a better private school and too you to go out working. Temptations are readily available to make the wrong choices at this young age. With the dances they are taught they perform within the community, gain confidence and attention….and they are all secretly in love with their dance teacher.

The application:

In Mumbai, India, the Tiny Miracles Foundation is active with various projects for the Pardeshi Community. This group of people has been living in one of the suburbs of Mumbai for four generations. Their traditional occupation is cane work. The community consists of approx. 1000 people and Tiny Miracles focuses on the children of this community, specifically on the 120 girls in the age from 6 – 18 years old.

The Foundation was founded by Laurien Meuter who visits India 3 times a year to check on all the activities she has put into place for this community.
There are activities to create awareness about different aspects of life such as healthcare, education and to teach the children various skills. Through these activities Tiny Miracles hopes to achieve that these girls don't end up in prostitution and have a chance to a better future. Children follow classes at school. Attendance is mandatory and a register is kept to see to it that children attend on a daily basis. As a "reward" outings are organized so the children can have a day out from time to time. These outings for instance are picnics, a day at the swimming pool and there are also camps for girls from 14 – 20 years old.

- A picnic for children aged from 4 to 8 years old (€ 550, -) to Suraj Water Park
- A picnic for children aged 8 to 12 years (€ 575, -) to a large amusement park Tikuji-ni-wadi
- A camp for girls aged 14 to 20 years (€ 1500, -) to Mamacha Gaon, a tourist park with swimming pool and other opportunities for activities
- A camp for girls aged 8 to 14 years (€ 1100, -) to Mamacha Gaon (the difference in price is the duration of stay – the younger children remain shorter.)
- A trip to the city (Mumbai) by bus for children from 12 to 18 years old (boys and girls mixed) (€ 350, -)
- A picnic for girls aged 12 to 18 years old at Water Kingdom (€ 525, -)
The costs consist mainly of entrance fees and transport for the camps also the rent for the accommodation.

These outings are the reason that Moments of Joy would like to support Tiny Miracles.
