Training for talented filmmakers in Zambia
Talented young people from poor families in Zambia have a dream: to become a Film maker or TV producer. An opportunity that typically is only reserved for the rich young people of this poverty-stricken African country. With a scholarship of €960 they can only follow a two-year training and find work.
The Kilimanjaro Film Institute Zambia offers young people a two year course in film and TV production. During that training, they produce a television series about special experiences of ordinary people which will actually be broadcasted on TV. The Kilimanjaro Film Institute Zambia was founded in 2014 by the Kilimanjaro Film Institute Tanzania, that was in its turn founded by the Dutch media entrepreneurs Frank Bierens and Geert van Asbeck in 2007. The purpose was and is to offer young people from poor families a creative training with guarantees on relevant work. And the chance to make their voices heard by telling their stories in picture and sound.
KFI Zambia was in the first few years of its existence financially supported by ACP/EU, HIVOS and Plan International. The donors had committed themselves for this period and so it was clear from the beginning on that after that period KFI should do it without their support. Now it is on its own feet. That means that there are pupils, but mostly pupils whose parents are able to pay for the training. KFI Zambia does get some income from work that the students, old students and teachers do for paying customers, but that is not enough to give disadvantaged young people a fair access to this thorough training.
