The Ministry of Education in Zimbabwe put a freeze on new staffing some years ago.  Despite pleas to the Ministry on the grounds that it is a special needs school no new ancillary staff have been sent to KGVI boarding school for disabled and deaf children in the past 5 years.  As older staff retire this leaves the school  very short of class assistants.  Because of the disabilities of the children many of them need extra help in the classroom.  In the higher levels many children need help with writing their notes.  These are children with Cerebral Palsy with uncontrolled movements which do not allow for writing.  For example in the second year of secondary school there are 4 students who are unable to write for themselves.  We need an assistant for them. In addition in the early learning classes for the deaf the school needs assistants who can help the little ones learn sign language as quickly as possible.  These little children come into school with no language at all and the sooner they can pick up sign language the sooner they will be able to begin formal learning.  Deaf adults can help these children acquire language quickly.  In total the school asks help in paying 4 class assistants (2 for senior classes, 2 for deaf classes).  Total costs for four assistants for a year: €10.028

At present the boarding school KGVI for disabled children in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe has ten children who cannot write for themselves because of their disability.  Most of them have cerebral palsy with uncontrolled movements while some of them have muscular dystrophy and are too weak to write legibly.  The school has managed to find either computers or netbooks for some of them to share but is now looking for 2 netbooks for 2 senior students.  They will be writing their public examinations in 2 years’ time so the school would like to get them trained in using computers  to get ready for their exams.  KGVI tries to provide every child who cannot write with an alternative and it is much better and easier to use a computer than to always be reliant on a class assistant who will be helping other children in the class.

To give young graduates from the school for streetchildren a better chance in the labor market de organisation Centro de Encontro wants to start investing in vocational training in Maputo Mozambique. They want to start a catering or cooking school  for the boys. 

We are looking for a sponsor to fund the uniforms for 121 children for 3 of the 6 schools in a remote and very poor part of Bali. 

the school for woodwork and carpentry for underpriviliges children would like to start organizing footballmatches twice a month to strengthen the bonds between the children in the school. 

Make sure the disabled Sheperd can become a tennis teacher!

Sherperd Banda is a disabled very talented tennis player. He is19 years old and just did his final exams to the KGVI School and Centre for disabled children in Bulawayo, Zimbawe. He lives there ever since his sixth birthday. Now he must find a job training. Wheelchair tennis is his passion and he got a chance to attend a coachingcursus in Australia.
During his elementary school Sheperd lost both of his parents. Thereupon he became demoralized for school until the day he came into contact with wheelchair tennis. Shepherd's life made a reversal and wheelchair tennis became his passion. He led the KGVI wheelchair tennis program and paved the way for others.

There are two main disadvantages for wheelchair tennis players in Zimbabwe. The first is the lack of a good quality wheelchairs and the other is lack of tournaments and thus competition. When the funds allowed it he played matches in South Africa, but this was costly and could therefore not take place regularly.
Now that he has done his O-levels Sheperd  would like to continue with his tennis training. He has put a lot of energy into making contacts and this had resulted in being selected for a coaching training at Tennis Australia.
He will have to do go to Sydney for 3 months – September, October, and November 2015.
He will be enrolled in 3 ITF (International Tennis Federation) tournaments. These are professional tournaments and he will play for prize money. His performance will contribute to his ITF ranking. At least one of these tournaments will be in Brisbane. There will be initial charges and travel/accommodation costs.
He will follow the level 1 Coaching course under the guidance of a professional mentor to qualify for the certificate. He can then work in Africa as a tennis coach.
His contacts in Australia can arrange Board and lodging for him.

But he needs to pay for the air ticket of approx € 1400 and the coaching fee of ca € 1250.

The plan is to create a vegetable garden to teach the children how to grow and be introduced to different sorts of vegetables than the "shimma" they are used to - which is the only vegetable they usually eat.....read more

women who enroll in the school for sewing and fine needlework founded by the organisation 'friends for the poor people' learn how to draw patterns,sew and decorate clothing with fine needlework and can go to work as a trained seamstress. all the women that finish the school will find work in a clothing factory or smaller sewing workshop and earn more than half to even twice as much as they would without the education. Some have even started their own sewingshop.

the dreamcatchers Kamamamma's are taking care of some 50 young adults who don't have anything to play sports with, something they would love to do. Playing soccer or basketball is something they can only dream of. For € 25 per child we can make this dream come true. For € 1.250 we can buy the necessary sports shoes, balls and provide them with trainers that can help them play their favorite sports.

Centro de Encontro is an independent NGO that organizes activities for poor children in Maputo, one of which is the school for streetchildren - Escolu de Rua - in the district of Laulane in maputo. The streetschool provides education for children who otherwise would not bew able to follow a proper education. Because the state stopped the supply of free schoolbooks and schoolmaterials it became necessary to buy books for the pupils in the First grades. Most books are workbooks so that each year some of the books must be replaced Other schoolsupplies that are required are student files, filing kabinets, writingpaper, notebooks and exercisebooks, chalk and blackboard erasers and pens.

The Prosaro Foundation focuses on the child and has been organizing projects for them for several years. Their newest upcoming project is one that would like to realize summer camps for children without parents.

Since there is currently no media that caters for young people living with disability, King George (kg6) would like to start an informal radio station that will be operating on the kg6 campus.

House of Talent (Jukwaa la Vipaji) is a theaterproduction that is initiated and realised with the help of a group of volunteers from the Dutch organisation Cre8 East Africa and the local organisation Mkombozi, a centre for homeless children in Moshi, Tanzania. 

The year 2013 started badly in Maputo with floods and storms. Tens of thousands of people were on the run from the river water and thousands lost their homes. The areas in which Centro de Encontro is active have been hit hard as well and the school in the Mahontas district has suffered considerable damage to the roof construction, the joists are warped and the water flows inside. 

David Booth worked in at least 8 different countries. In 1989 he decided to settle in Indonesia. The British engineer chose to live here because this country, and especially the people, stole his heart: 'the Indonesian people are good from the heart, generous from the soul and care for others'. He founded the East Bali Poverty Project (EBPP) with all of his life savings. He has been executive director ever since and has designed many projects for this foundation together with a team of 104 local people.

Centro de Encontro is an independent NGO that has organised many activities for street children in Maputo. The organisation has played an important role in education in this region for over 18 years and over the past 15 years almost 3000 children got their diploma and a chance to a better future.
Each year the street school is looking for sponsors to help  with purchasing the necessary text books and school supplies.

Sitembinkosi (7 years, albino) is one of the many victims of AIDS in Africa. Both her parents died of the disease.

Proniño is a N.G.O. in Honduras that offers street children a future. In 1998 hurricane Mitch resulted in an estimated 10.000 deaths and 500.000 roofless and disunited families. A high number of children have no parents or parents that are unable to take care of them. These children wander on the streets and most of them are in a bad medical and psychological condition (the majority is addicted to glue sniffing).

In Mumbai, India, the Tiny Miracles Foundation is active with various projects for the Pardeshi Community. This group of people has been living in one of the suburbs of Mumbai for four generations. Their traditional occupation is cane work. The community consists of approx. 1000 people and Tiny Miracles focuses on the children of this community, specifically on the 120 girls in the age from 6 – 18 years old.

Pure! was founded in 2010 by a Group of enthusiastic volunteers from the Netherlands. Their Dream Centre was created to give the Cambodian children a chance to fulfill their dreams. It is a safe place where schooling is offered and chances are created for these children to have a better future.

Via the VDZ Foundation,  Moments of Joy helps fund projects of the Prasaro Foundation in Surinam. This Foundation runs a few houses in which they provide housing for children in the ages of 5 – 10 years old. Some of these children don't have any parents and there are also children whose parents can't take care of them anymore or that have been left to take care of themselves.

Bulawayo Shelter Projects Center (an initiative of a group of churches) provides workshop facilities and skills training for destitute and unemployed people who wish to gather their own income.

Often, the art projects are combined with rendering community services. Like the Mural Painting at the Children Park at the JDWNR Hospital

Since a few years the foundation TOV makes musicals for children from asylumcenters in the Netherlands. These children make a musical of their own and have performances at schools in the vicinity of their "home".

The percentage of people carrying the HIV-virus is high in Zimbabwe (ca. 20%). More than 2000 people a week die of aids-related diseases in this country. 

Centro de Encontro is an independent NGO that has organised many activities for street children in Maputo over the past 15 years. The traditional day of festivities for the streetchildren is a great succes each year. A day away from the miserable streetlife with music, dance, sports, games and food. 
In these somber times centro de encontro is trying to be a safe haven for the poorest children of the city of Maputo. 

The Lukala Drama Group is founded by development aid workers in the preventive health care in Zimbabwe.

Samanta Barua lives in Bangladesh and is director of the NGO Swanivar Bangladesh (Self-reliant Bangladesh). He earned his Bachelor Engineering degree and worked as an engineering consultant but concentrated on developing innovative educative materials for rural area's to help fight poverty and illiteracy.

Entumbeni Old People's Home is a home for 75 black people somewhere in the middle of the townships (the politically correct term would be: high density areas) of Bulawayo.

Rapid urbanisation and the growing rift between rich and poor are causing a steady increase in the number of homeless young people in the world. Their lives are often the subject of photo's, newspaper reports and television documentaries.

ARTE ACCION is a cultural organization that emerged as an artistic brigade just after hurricane Mitch (November 1998) to bring relief and joy to the people in the temporary camps and on the streets of the destroyed capital city, Tegucigalpa. After this experience, the artists decided to continue and work towards the consolidation of Arte ACCION as an association that projects artists and promotes art as an integral part of community development. Art brings alternative opportunities for recreation, expression, communication and social integration to people who do not normally have access to this.

Accolade is a holidaypark in France - providing bungalows and a camping-ground with tents, which aims at Dutch families with a disabled familymember. These families can't go to ordinary holidayparks, because parks with facilities for the handicapped are rare, expensive and in any case do not offer continuous care.

The Nkashe school lies in a rural area, 22 km from the town Gwanda, 130 km.from Bulawayo. The area is too dry and the harvest of 2002 was bad. Since most of the parents are dependent on agriculture for their living, those that did not turn to illegal gold panning are now dependent on food aid. 

Like all children in the world, children from the garbage belt Bantar Gebang in Indonesia dream about what they would like to be later. They all have their idols, like pop musician Krisdayanti, soap star Jihan Fahira and tv-celebrity Eko Patrio for instance.

A group of Dutch volunteers managed to start a (Montessori) Primary School in Bankass, a remote area in Mali.

Michael is a deaf boy who attends the Marula Primary School for deaf children. A special needs teacher there - with the appropriate name of Mrs.Moyo, found out that the only thing Michael really wants to learn is sewing.

In the Buddhist Semthokha Dzong Monastery in Buthan the monks take in (orphan)boys that have no other place to live. However, the facilities of the monastery are not really meant for little boys, the Spartan way of life and the lack of means to give the boys an education make it seem like the middle-ages.

Sidi is a young Kenian woman (nobody knows exactly what age she is, but it must be early twenties) whose face was burnt to the bone when she fell into an open fire while
having an epileptic fit. She lay in a rural hospital with nothing being done
for 18 months, maggots kept her face clean. The hospital used to wheel her
out in a wheelbarrow and hose her down. No one wanted to touch her. Sidi's
mother was banned from the hospital because she was asking for help when
they could give none. This all happened some years ago.

Request from KG VI: We are desperately trying to find ways to improve teaching of deaf students. There can be no teaching while teachers do not know sign language. We have designed a course to teach students teachers who intend to teach deaf students when they graduate. Unbelievable that sign language is not offered as a subject at the college but it isn’t. This year we have no funds to continue with the very successful sign language teaching programme we ran last year. We would like to hold 3 lessons per week, 2 for the trainee teachers and 1 for parents of deaf children. We have 6 facilitators and there are on average 12 working weeks in a term.

Per term: € 1100
Total for a year: € 3300 

In 2012 two of the KGVI students were voted best junior sportsman and sportswoman of the year. They both play wheelchair tennis and win many awards within Zimbabwe. If they are to succeed any further they need to play some regional tournaments. The boy, Shepherd Banda, in particular is very good. Shepherd was one of our 'naughty' boys until his teachers found his own particular talent and wheelchair tennis has turned his life around. There are 2 regional tournaments he could attend in South Africa but he would have to attend with his coach. The costs cover fees, accommodation, food and transport for two tournaments.

With an increasing number of children in wheelchairs if KG VI school takes them on any trips, they cannot fit children and wheelchairs in the bus. The school would like to purchase a small lightweight trailer which could fit 6 to 8 wheelchairs and could be towed behind the bus.

Dr. Bojang is a Gambian doctor who returned to Gambia after his studies in the United States. He now runs a simple small clinic (with six beds) where he treats people for 50 dalasi (€ 1.50) for a consultation and medicine.

For farm families living in the countryside of Juigalpa it is difficult to keep one's head above water. Some small farmers produce just enough to survive, but extreme drought can lead to famine in the countryside. Most of the small farmers have insufficient income to provide their families with such basic needs as clothing, school, health care, a good house, etc. There is no money for extras.

Even for rich Bangladeshi or Europeans, a serious illness in Bangladesh is a disaster: a private plane to Bangkok is the only way to ensure high standard medical help. The poor are dependent on the medical care provided by the state hospitals. Here, patients lie in big, dirty and crowded wards, under staircases and broom closets, often with mattresses on the floor.

The School of Hope is a primary school in one of the poorest neighbourhoods in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The school was founded by foreign volunteers for (street) children who would not go to school at all if this possibility did not exist. The school is almost free of charge. (Parents are asked to pay 5 taka, the equivalent of 8 eurocent, per month to show their commitment).  The school now has 125 children. They follow the official curriculum of the state, but also get English, Art and Music. And - very special for Bangladesh - the teachers do not hit the children.  All students get a free daily snack. Free medical and dental care is also offered if needed. 

Contact is an organisation that offers free counselling service to people in the region of Bulawayo who cannot afford the fees charged by private counsellors. The counsellors are volunteers, trained by Contact, who offer their services after work and during the weekend.

John Dube , from Harare, Zimbabwe, worked as a guard for a European family until he contracted lung disease and could no longer work long shifts.

The KG VI Centre in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe is a (boarding) school for physically handicapped children. We have sponsored several projects for this school in the last few years, such as musical instruments, a computer and an asphalt baseball field.
Sadly, the situation in Zimbabwe has deteriorated so much that just having enough food for a meal is a moment of joy for the children of KV VI, and having a parent or close relative come pick you up for the holidays is almost a luxury. People are struggling to survive and what they need least of all is a handicapped child to take care of.

The local health worker at the Shangani Mine is paid for by the government. 

Two Dutch volunteers, Sibrenne Wagenaar and Margriet Schut, in cooperation with CID Ghana have set up a pre-school in northern Ghana for the children of two small communities. In no time there was a flood of enrolments for the pre-school, and within five months from its inception there were about 95 pupils aged 3 to 6. Two teachers have been hired and trained, there is a school committee, and parents' meetings have been organized. The school is also a Nutrition Center and offers the children 2 meals a day.

Asociacion Cultural Arte Acción is een organisatie van kunstenaars, opgericht in Honduras tijdens de orkaan Mitch (eind 1998) met het doel om de bevolking moed in te spreken via openlucht voorstellingen en het organiseren van kunstworkshops voor kinderen in de opvangcentra voor de dakloze families. De acteurs, musici, beeldende kunstenaars, dansers, steltlopers en poppenkastspelers hebben vervolgens een NGO opgezet en werken sindsdien in wijken en dorpen rond de hoofdstad Tegucigalpa als een organisatie die artiesten en kunst promoot als een integraal onderdeel van "community development". Kunst wordt zo een onderdeel van het leven van mensen die normaliter geen toegang hebben tot kunst(onderwijs) en biedt goede alternatieven voor minder creatieve vormen van recreatie, expressie, communicatie en sociale integratie.

Having a physical handicap has more serious consequences for Russian children than it would have for European children. And the definition of a "handicap" is much broader in Russian: you are for instance already seen as handicapped if you have diabetes. Even children with minor handicaps are often refused by the schools. Legally the schools are obliged to take them in, but it still happens more often than not. Apart from the problem that these children do not get an education, the social rejection had a disastrous effect on their self-esteem. These children become depressed, stop talking, do not show any lust for life….

Company for an association of blind people in the Philippines, € 4050
On Cebu Island our project finder is setting up a cooperation for blind musicians and masseurs. They could find work in hotels, but live in a slum to far too far from those. Moreover, they don’t have money for ‘marketing’. 

In a slum in Cebu City  15 blind adults with their 39 partners and children share one simple house with less than one room per family. They are living under very difficult circumstances and some of the children are malnourished. The meager income comes from a Rondalla Band, giving massages, begging and selling fashion accessories.
That income would be much better if they could join forces. Our project finder on Cebu Island (who also has set up a now well running fishing cooperative for which we paid a second hand boat) now plans to set up the Cebu Blind Association. Currently, the blind sometimes are brought by family-members with public transport to the airport, where they then play with the band at the entrance, or to the big hotels, where they offer themselves as entertainment or massage therapists, but then they, of course, still have to see if there is work.

It would be better to advertise, have a little office with a phone number for appointments and a second hand van for transport (which is at the same time a moving advertisment). According to the calculations of our project finder revenues in the first year are sufficient to provide everyone a fair income and to bear the cost and there will there be a modest profit in the second year.
